Cyprus Dendrochronology Laboratory (CDL) at APAC Labs Has Successful Fieldwork Season

Over the past month, the Cyprus Dendrochronology Laboratory (CDL) at APAC Labs had its annual fieldwork season in collaboration with the Cornell University Tree-ring Laboratory, the University of Georgia Laboratory of Tree-Ring and Archaeological Wood Analysis at Georgia (TRAWG). Work also benefitted from the support of the Cyprus Department of Antiquities and the Department of Forestry, who are founding partners of the CDL.

During this year’s fieldwork, dendrochronology researchers focused on documenting the forest history of Juniper trees across Cyprus, with the goal of creating a new tree-ring chronology for juniper trees and wooden heritage objects. This timeline can help date heritage objects and track forest growth, providing key insights into the environmental history of the island. In addition to the fieldwork conducted to develop a new tree-ring chronology for juniper trees on Cyprus, the team also had a preliminary visit to the churches of Askas village as well as the collection of the Kykkos Monastery and its Cultural Foundation, and made plans for further documentation and analysis of wooden heritage objects.
