ECHOES is a European initiative supporting the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH). Its goal is to help museums, archives, research labs, and creative industries collaborate more easily by aligning methods, standards, and tools across the sector. ECHOES does this through four pillars: mapping and connecting communities, improving data interoperability and stewardship, co-developing practical digital workflows (from documentation and analysis to conservation and reuse), and building capacity through targeted training and curricula. At its core, ECHOES is about integrating existing efforts—linking what already works, filling gaps with open, usable solutions, and ensuring that diverse stakeholders (including early-career professionals and under-represented groups) can participate meaningfully in the Cloud.
In the last week of November, APAC Labs and the Cyprus Institute hosted a series of ECHOES-related activities. One session gathered Work Package 4 (Communities) members to refine strategies for building ECHOES on top of existing and emerging cultural-heritage communities. ECHOES also convened local partners in Cyprus to explore joint collaborative scenarios in museology in a workshop, with the aim of better understanding their needs and using these insights to develop a stronger, federated community in the cultural heritage sector through ECHOES.
Finally, during the first weekend of December, during the 5th International Conference of Byzantine and Medieval Studies (CBMS) taking place in Nicosia, Cyprus, two sessions were devoted to showcasing ECHOES-related projects. APAC Labs researchers highlighted the role of digital technologies and approaches to Byzantine and Medieval scholarship, and emphasized the utility of the ECHOES platform to support future collaborative research projects.
