Located in southeast Cyprus, the Late Bronze Age site of Pyla-Kokkinokremos offers a unique opportunity to examine a “time capsule” of a critical phase (Late Cypriot IIC-IIIA) in the island’s history. The Pyla-Kokkinokremos Excavation Project, led by Ghent University in collaboration with the Cyprus Institute and supported by the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, aims to better understand the site’s settlement structure, the reasons for its founding before the end of the 13th century BCE, and the circumstances of its desertion in the early 12th century BCE.
Building on a successful collaboration initiated in 2014 with the former Cyprus-Pyla Excavation Project, jointly directed by Ghent University, the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium), and the Mediterranean Archaeological Society (Greece), APAC Labs researchers have been directly involved with the both the first and current phases of the project, developing a digital environment of the site with the aim of studying its architectural remains. Using a combination of multiple 3D documentation methods, including aerial and terrestrial digital surveys, APAC Labs and the Pyla-Kokkinokremos team have been able to comprehensively analyze the site’s architectural features and integrate these results with 3D shape analyses of key artefacts found at the site.
