APAC Labs researchers Valentina Vassallo and Sorin Hermon, in collaboration with Giacomo Landeschi of Lund University, recently published an article titled Digging in excavation diaries: digital re-assessment of stratigraphy in 3D GIS; The sanctuary of Ayia Irini, Cyprus as part of the Proceedings of the 46th Annual Conference on Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology.
The article discusses the digital re-assessment of the sanctuary's stratigraphy using 3D GIS. The aim is to digitally reconstruct the site to question the positioning of finds and their setting within the sanctuary.
The authors conduct a preliminary analysis regarding the relation between the sampled statuettes and the layers’ heights, aiming to identify different alternatives. They emphasise the use of 3D geographical system to visualise different alternatives and the challenges associated with the accuracy and measurements of the excavation plans and findings. The potential use of 3D GIS in addressing challenges and enhancing the overall archaeological process and the necessity of documentation for the analysis of sites and artefacts is discussed.
