Dendrochronological study and analysis of the iconostasis doors the Monastery of Agia Napa

In early August, Cyprus Dendrochronology Lab (CDL) at the Cyprus Institute, hosted the iconostasis doors and an icon from the Monastery of Agia Napa in its premises. The researchers of CDL applied the digital scanning method to estimate "terminus post quem" of the iconostasis doors. One of the benefits of the method is protecting the physical integrity of the item while allowing researchers to gain tree ring data of the wooden object. Later on, scanned images were uploaded to a special dendrochronology software for further analyses.

The CDL team also took small samples from the icon and iconostasis doors to explore tree species that were used for these items. With the contribution of local authorities, CDL will continue to shed light on the wooden heritage of Cyprus.
