Collaborative Interdisciplinary Research on Byzantine and Medieval Cyprus by APAC Labs / STARC presented at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens by Nikolas Bakirtzis

Interdisciplinary research work on Byzantine and Medieval monuments and sites from Cyprus was the focus of Assoc. Prof. Nikolas Bakirtzis's talk at the Gennadius Library at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens with the title “A Closer Look: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Byzantine and Medieval Cyprus.”

The interdisciplinary team of experts of APAC Labs has implemented analytical tools, digital imaging and scientific visualization to shed light on the layered histories of paintings and buildings by unveiling unknown details and secrets. The talk reflected on selected examples from work in the field and in the lab focusing on a range of examples like the UNESCO-listed Painted Churches of the Troodos Mountains, the Early Christian architecture of Salamis and Kourion, the medieval monasteries of the mountains of Kerynia and the fortifications of Nicosia and Famagusta to demonstrate new perspectives in the study of the art and architecture of Byzantine and Medieval Cyprus.

During his talk, Assoc. Prof. Bakirtzis showed how interdisciplinary approaches to Byzantine monasticism, medieval cities and fortifications can help to frame research questions that help us to explore the complex island landscapes of the Byzantine, Medieval and Early Modern Mediterranean. He also discussed how APAC Labs’ cross-disciplinary research on the materiality and the provenance of works of art can be significantly enhanced through the use of advanced digital and analytical methods.
