APAC Labs Researcher Avgoustinos Avgousti and associate professor Georgios Papaioannou of the Museology Research Laboratory, Ionian University Corfu, Greece recently published a paper discussing the challenges faced by small museums, particularly in Cyprus, in digitising and democratising their collections online. It highlights the key issues such as lack of resources and funding that hinder small museums from effectively showcasing their collections on the web. The study conducted interviews with six small museums in Cyprus to gain insights into their struggles and limitations.
The paper underscores the importance of addressing these challenges by investing in technology, providing staff training, and fostering collaborations. By doing this, these small museums can democratise their collections and make them accessible to a wider audience. Simplifying technology and developing user-friendly tools are crucial steps towards enhancing the online presence of small museum collections.
