APAC Labs Researcher Rahaf Orabi recently published a paper titled "Decoding urban evolution: A parametric reconstruction of the Old City of Aleppo between the mamluk and the post-war city" in Digital Applications in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage.
The Old City of Aleppo faced significant destruction during the Syrian war, leaving its historic districts in ruins. This study explores the use of digital pipelines to visualise and analyse the history and evolution of two districts within the Old City.
The goal was to develop a parametric workflow for reconstructing a section of Mamluk-era Aleppo using cartographical and historical data.
A comprehensive digital field survey was carried out using laser scanning and aerial photogrammetry, resulting in point cloud data. This data was then compared to the historical parametric model to identify 3D urban changes over time.
